The Shopify Summer Editions 2025, under the motto "Horizons," usher in a new era of store design. The new theme system in combination with advanced AI (Shopify Magic) provides merchants and developers with unprecedented modular freedom and speed in creating highly conversion-optimized storefronts.
The new Horizon design system is more than just a theme—it's the new framework for the Shopify storefront. It replaces the complexity of the old Online Store 2.0 (OS 2.0) framework, offering a radically simplified yet deeper modular structure.
The real game-changer is the deep integration of Shopify Magic AI directly into the Theme Editor. Design work that previously took weeks and required a developer can now be completed in minutes via text input.
The combination of the modular Horizon system and the accessible Shopify Magic AI removes the last major hurdles in shop design: high development costs and lack of flexibility.
2025 will be the year when every merchant, regardless of their technical knowledge, can create, test, and iterate a highly professional, individualized, and conversion-strong storefront. The focus shifts from coding and design to strategic brand management and content creation—supported by AI.
This means you can place blocks within a main section (e.g., a collection), which in turn contain further blocks, up to eight levels deep. This allows for extremely detailed and flexible layouts that were previously only possible with complex custom code. It maximizes design freedom in the Theme Editor.
Not necessarily immediately, but the Horizon system is the future of Shopify. To utilize the full flexibility and the best performance values as well as the latest AI design tools, switching to one of the new Horizon themes or a compatible new-generation theme is advisable. Older themes (OS 2.0) will continue to be supported but will not benefit from the deep nesting.
The AI can create a functional layout, texts, and image suggestions in seconds. This is ideal for startups and prototyping (A/B testing). However, a unique and brand-consistent Customer Experience still requires human fine-tuning of design, wording, and strategy. The AI is an accelerator, not a replacement for branding.
Horizon was developed as a "Mobile-First" theme from the ground up. The modular blocks are designed to be optimally rearranged on smaller screens. In combination with the faster Liquid components, this ensures lightning-fast loading times and high user-friendliness, which is essential for the conversion rate on mobile devices.
AI Block Generation is a design tool: It creates frontend code and visual layouts in the Theme Editor (What the customer sees). Shopify Flow is an automation tool: It controls backend processes, such as sending an email for low stock or adding tags to customers (What the customer does not see). They operate in different areas of the shop.
Most modern apps that work via Theme App Extensions are compatible. However, since Horizon uses a new, more deeply nested system, older apps that inject direct Liquid code into specific, rigid theme files may require adjustments. It is always advisable to test new themes with all critical apps in a testing environment.
